Why should I exercise during a weight reduction program?

  1. You will burn calories!

  2. Exercise improves your cardio-vascular system!

  3. Exercise improves muscle tone!

  4. It is an activity other than eating!

  5. You will develop the habit you need for maintenance!  You will regain weight if you do not exercise after reaching your happy weight!

When you are overweight it is more difficult to exercise.  You do not want to do anything which could cause injury to yourself.  Therefore, I strongly recommend that you exercise at your comfort level.  This often results in short, frequent periods of exercise.  You will still see a gradual improvement and will notice a marked increase in your stamina.

  • AEROBIC EXERCISE

  • I strongly recommend a walking or treadmill program.  This is usually the easiest type of aerobic exercise for pateints who wish to lose weight and inches.  Try to exercise everyday, even if you only walk for 10 or 15 minutes.  You will notice a rapid increase in your stamina. Remember, 5 minutes is better than 0 minutes.

  • Other types of aerobic exercise include stairs, bicycling, running, rowing, and swimming.  Again, start slowly and gradually increase your pace and time.

 

  • ANAEROBIC EXERCISE

          This type of exercise involves activities that improve your muscle tone.  I recommend the use of light weights        with frequent repetitions, rather than heavy weight lifting.  I am more interested in you increasing and maintaining        your muscle tone.  I do not encourage the build up of muscle mass during the reduction phase of your program.
